Finance Minister AMA Muhith said yesterday in Parliament that black money worth Tk 13,372 crore has been laundered since independence from the country, generating Tk 1,454 crore as tax.
In reply to the written questions, he stated that 1,040 out of 5,127 branches of eight public and specialized banks held losses last year, according to data from June 30, 2016.
Muhith said, until Tuesday, about 15.52 lakh people or organizations were paying income tax for fiscal year 2016-17. There are 29.03 the number of tax identification of lakh (TIN) in the country, he added.
The objective of collecting income tax for the coming fiscal year is Tk 87,190 crore, Muhith said.
State Minister for Telecom Tarana Halim also told Parliament that Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) has connected 1,200 trade unions to a fiber optic network in order to ensure the " High-speed Internet access throughout the country.
She stated that a project to link more than 1,000 unions would be implemented by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) division, as decided in And a meeting of the Domestic Network Committee.
The ICT division is also taking initiatives to link tanks, areas surrounded by rivers, canals and remote areas, she added.
