The filing deadline for tax returns for 2017-2018 is over yesterday, amid a rush of taxpayers seeking to comply with the rules and avoid paying late fees.
Until 8 pm yesterday, tax authorities received 14.25 lakh, an increase of 24 percent over last year, according to a provisional estimate from the National Board of Revenue.
"We had a very good response," said a senior BNR official.
He said that they would receive returns until 10 pm and that the total would increase. Taxpayers will be able to ask the tax offices for more time to provide returns. They will then have to pay late fees.
Total revenue collection increased 18 percent year-over-year to 58,897 crores in July-October, NBR reported. Income tax, the second largest source of income, rose 16% to reach Tk 17,031 crore during the period.
