India’s Religare says it suffers cyber attack

Several units of the Indian financial services group of Religare have suffered a cyber attack, but its systems, operations and sensitive information on customers were secure and unaffected, said Monday.

Religare, which offers a wide range of financial services, including stocks and commodity trading in the holding company Religare Enterprises Ltd, added that the attack was of "average severity" and that " Of the necessary damage "had been taken.

The attack comes at a time of heightened attention to cybersecurity after global companies have been affected by two major infections containing ransomware applications in recent months. It is not known what type of disturbance affected Religare.

A spokesman for Religare refused to give more specific details and said that the company continued to assess the situation.

Three sources from various units of Religare told Reuters that the cyber attack had affected servers on Monday and that at least some of the internal computer brokerage systems had been shut down.

Some staff members lost access to computer systems as the technical teams worked to resolve the problem, these sources added. Last month, operations at one of the three terminals of India's largest container port, JNPT, near the Mumbai shopping center, were disrupted by Ransomware's global attack Of NotPetya.
