Eurogroup gets new chief | The Daily Star

Portuguese Finance Minister Mario Centeno was chosen as the new Eurogroup leader on Monday, with key work to chaperone the necessary reforms in the single currency bloc.

The little-known former central banker will replace the outgoing Eurogroup leader Jeroen Dijsselbloem in January and beat his counterparts in Luxembourg, Slovakia and Latvia to win one of the most sought after positions in Europe.

"Centeno, the finance minister of Portugal, was elected new president of the Eurogroup," said the Council of European Ministers in a tweet after the vote.

Centeno has long been the favorite of the post and his victory came after two rounds of balloting during an in camera session of the 19 Eurogroup Ministers in Brussels.
